This Friday Author Spotlight is coming a little late. Sorry about that. I had some internet issues last week.
Anyway, better late than never. I’d like to welcome Rebecca Jaycox back with her novel, The Other Inheritance, which is celebrating its one year anniversary since its original release! Congrats Rebecca!
Rebecca grew up in the tiny town of Berryman, which borders the Mark Twain National Forest and the Courtois River about 70 miles south of St. Louis. The beautiful landscape fed her imagination, and she began writing stories at age 10 and never stopped. Always seeking adventure, Rebecca moved to France after she graduated college with a journalism degree to teach English at a French high school. Bitten by the travel bug, she has recently visited Italy, Greece, Austria, Spain, and finally made it to her bucket-list destination of Istanbul last summer. Rebecca now lives in New York City with her husband, Gregory. She is the curator and program director of the YA Lit Series at the 92nd Street Y–one of New York’s premier cultural centers. She enjoys reading and writing fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, and science fiction. The Other Inheritance is her first novel.

She touched the frog. Just once. It leaped into the air and hopped away, disappearing under the classroom desks. It had been awaiting its fate as a science experiment, fully dead, the stench of formaldehyde permeating the room . . .
Seventeen-year-old Reggie has been having a tougher time than usual. As if dealing with her alcoholic mother and fighting school bullies isn’t enough, dead things keep coming back to life and this biker dude shows up in her dreams, babbling about magic and a world called the Other.
Reggie’s life is changing, and she has no idea why. Or whether she should believe Rhys, the man in her dreams, who claims she’s in danger and that someone is coming to take her to a safer reality.
And when Asher shows up, things really get crazy.

Now for a character interview with Brwyn Cavill, an Elf Changeling:
Where were you born, and what was it like growing up there?
The Other was truly blessed the day I was born in Market City, which is in the Witch Plains. These days it’s known as Holden’s Folly. That’s what happens when a psychotic Dark Mage decides to take over the world and wins. Poor Holden lost and got his head on a pike for his troubles.
What is the happiest memory from your childhood?
Meeting my Wolf for the first time, shifting into his skin. I felt whole, powerful, all my senses enhanced. I understood what it truly meant to be alive.
Do you have a close relationship with your family?
I’m an only child and a Changeling. When I’m feeling feral, I grow fur and claws and howl at the moon. Changelings are rare and my parents desperately wanted me to carry on the Changeling blood line. But I fell in love with a human. They didn’t approve and she felt guilty and gave me up. I’m still angry with her.
Have you ever been in love? How did that work out for you?
As I’ve mentioned before, I was in love with a luscious fire mage named Megan. She tried to resist me but no woman is immune to my charm for long. My parents didn’t approve, but I didn’t care. I was a grown man, capable of making my own decisions. Yes, she was Human, and we would have faced persecution, but I would’ve set the world on fire for her. She felt guilty for driving a wedge between me and my family and broke it off. I’m still so angry at her even my Wolf sees red. But recently she’s come back into my orbit, and as I’ve said before, resistance to me is futile.
What kind of clothing do you prefer to wear?
I do naked best, but I can’t have all the ladies swooning. When I do don clothes, I’m just as comfortable in a formal suit as casual pants and a tunic. I make the clothes; they don’t make me.
What is your favorite food? If it’s an usual one, could you describe it for us?
Wild boar freshly killed. My Wolf craves meat and the challenge of the hunt, and the dangerous boar provides both. 1,000 pounds with wicked tusks, the boar is a worthy opponent.
What do you own that would be hardest to part with? Why?
My airship! It’s a sweet little piece that’s saved my life more than once.
What was your greatest achievement?
Being elected as the youngest Councilman of the Witch Plains while secretly working with the Resitance to overthrow that magically foul dictator, Andrius Drake.
What was the most exciting adventure you’ve ever been on?
Flying my little darling, Reggie Lang, over enemy lines into Hornsbay Forest. My ship took a few hits, but my Wolf loved the battle! So did I.
Would you ever or have you ever lied? How do you feel about lying?
I’ve been a spy for the Resistance for the last 10 years, since I was 18, so subterfuge is second nature to me. I have a silver tongue and I know how to use it.
