Follow Fest 2014

Follow Fest is a yearly event that allows authors to connect with each other, support each other, and help to build one another’s platforms. It’s not too late to join in!

Name: Renee Scattergood

Fiction or nonfiction?

Mainly fiction, but I do post the occasional article on writing and/or self publishing on my blog, or as a guest on other blogs.

What genres do you write?

Fantasy and YA Fantasy

Are you published?

Yes, I am currently self publishing a series of novellas called Shadow Stalker. Epsiode 1, The Hidden Truth, was released on 30 August 2014 and is available as a free download through Smashwords and other online book retailers. Episode 2, The Delohi-Saqu’s Fate, has just been released and is available for 99 cents through Smashwords, Kindle and other online book retailers. You can also get it for half price by signing up to my mailing list below.

Do you do anything in addition to writing?

I love pretty much anything to do with marketing and promotion. I love helping out other authors in that area as well.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born in the U.S., but I came to Australia nearly 10 years ago to meet my (now) husband. We met online and after meeting in person we knew we never wanted to be apart again. So I’ve been here since. We’re still very happily married and our daughter turns 9 this month. I can’t believe how quickly the time has flown.

Our daughter is autistic, so she takes up a lot of my time, but I love her to pieces. I wouldn’t want to change a thing about her. She’s got the funniest and most amazing personality and she teaches me a lot about myself. She also gives me some great ideas to write about. She wants me to help her write some children’s stories. She’s a pretty decent artist, so it will be really fun to help her with that.

It’s hard at times too because I have to go to school with her 4 days a week, and I homeschool her 1 day a week. It’s like having a full-time job on top of trying to write full-time, so I have to come up with some really clever ways for finding time to write.

I don’t have much time for anything else at the moment, but when I do have free time I love to read and watch movies. We have our family movie night every Friday night to make sure we have our time as a family. We either have pizza (my favorite food) delivered or I’ll make tacos or something, and we’ll eat dinner while watching a movie together. It’s a lot of fun.

What are you reading right now?

At the moment I’m reading Sins of the Father by Melissa Barker-Simpson. After that I’ll be reading the sequel, Hands of Evil.

Which authors influenced you the most?

Oddly I haven’t been influenced to write by other authors. As a kid, I was a huge Star Wars fan. I suppose you can say that George Lucas influenced my love for telling stories, but I hadn’t even considered writing them down until I was in my mid 20’s. And I didn’t even consider writing as a career until I was nearly 30.

Although, when I’m having trouble with writing, Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth Series always gets the creative juices flowing. I’ve also been creatively inspired recently by a series called The Emperor’s Edge by Lindsay Buroker.

Do you have a newsletter?

I don’t have a newsletter, but you can sign up to my mailing list. I send out updates a couple of times a month, plus I offer subscriber only contests, shorts stories/flash fiction, and other goodies. At the moment, I am running a monthly draw for subscribers where 1 person wins 12 free episodes of Shadow Stalker. Subscribers also get everything I publish for half price.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

I am still in the process of building my beta readers list. I’m also happy to be a beta reader for other authors and help out with blog tours and other promotional activities. Feel free to contact me.

Also this week I am running a Pro-Blitz Tour to promote preorders for Shadow Stalker: The Delohi-Saqu’s Fate (Episode 2). There will be a interviews, reviews, a short story, contest, and more. We will also be running a virtual book signing at the end of the tour on Saturday 27 September, the day of the release. You can find out more about it on my Events page.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you’re participating in the Follow Fest 2014, feel free to leave me comment with the link to your post and I’ll be happy to check it out!

Hi Alex, thanks for stopping by and nice to meet you. Star Wars is awesome… no doubt about it! 😀

Hi Renee! Glad to meet you through Follow Fest! Australia sounds awesome. And I love Star Wars, too. I’ve instilled a love for it in my girls as well. Gotta keep the legacy going!

    • 27 September, 2014

Hi Ava, nice to meet you too! Yeah, I’m instilling a love for Star Wars in my daughter, but I’m not sure if I find it disturbing yet that she has a thing for the Sith, and she’s not so interested in the Jedi. LOL She has even named her pitch black guinea pig, Sith.

Shadow Stalker looks creepy good! Loving the title. We love how your daughter inspires you, so cute!

    • 27 September, 2014

Thanks! I does get creepy as the story goes on. 😉 My daughter is a riot. She was cracking me up with her bouncing bubbles last night. I think she’s decided she now also wants to be a professional bubble blower with the goal of blowing a donut shaped bubble with lots of little bubbles inside. LOL

How wonderful that you found true love across the net. That’s the kind of story that books are made of.

    • 26 September, 2014

      Thanks Elizabeth. 😀

You do seem to have a good handle on marketing. I’ll be looking at what you do with interest! So nice to meet you!

Thanks Samantha! Nice to meet you too!

Hi Renee! It’s great to hear an online romance success story. I’m happy it all worked out for you. Self publishing is definitely a lot of hard work. I wish you well on your blitz and much success for your books. I’ll connect with you on your social media locations. Nice to meet you.

It’s wonderful to meet you. Your migrating to Australia story is so romantic, loved reading all about you!

    • 26 September, 2014

Hi Nas, it’s great meetingyou as well. I’m so glad you enjoyed reading about me. Thanks so much for stopping by. I’ll be making my way around to all the new people on the list later as well!

  9. 26 September, 2014

It does sound like you have some creative marketing ideas! I like the mailing list goodies idea. I love your story about meeting your Australian husband and it sounds like you have a very special, inspiring daughter. That’s great that she would like to write stories. Nice to meet you in the Fest!

    • 26 September, 2014

Hi Nick, thanks! I love experimenting with different marketing and promotional techniques. I’ll be honest. Most of them don’t work out, but I learn a lot from the experience. The hardest part with it all is with the internet, things are constantly changing and it’s hard to keep up. What works one month, may not work the next.

My daughter is the best. So is my husband. They’re a lot alike, although they’ll never admit it. 😉

It’s great meeting you . Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for sharing. I’m always on the look out for Betas. =)

Hopping over from the Follow Fest – it’s nice to meet another fantasy writer! I really enjoyed the Emperor’s Edge series, too! 🙂

    • 26 September, 2014

Hi Emma, nice to meet you. It’s great isn’t it? Who’s your favorite character? I love Sicarius. He kinda reminds me of myself in an odd way.

  12. 25 September, 2014

Yay for Star Wars, and pizza. I’ve become a meat minimalist for pizza. My latest score was takeout from the place down the street; one medium with bacon, one medium with beef. Delish!!

    • 26 September, 2014

Mmmmm…. I love pepperoni and mushroom. Normally I get a supreme though, which has pepperoni and mushroom, among other things. So what do you think of Disney purchasing the Star Wars franchise? I think they’re going to do an incredible job with it. I love seeing stuff about it on Disney Channel.

  13. 24 September, 2014

I love the idea of family movie night. Okay, I love the idea of pretty much anything as long as pizza is involved. 🙂

And how nice that your daughter not only inspires you but also wants to write, too!

    • 25 September, 2014

Pizza is awesome. I can actually tell if I’m getting sick by my cravings. The more toppings I want, the healthier I am. I really know I’m getting sick when all I want is cheese. My daughter wants to do a lot of things. She wants to be a fashion designer, artist, violinist, dancer, singer and when she has time a little writing too. Lol

  14. 24 September, 2014

I have always wanted to go to Australia!! It’s on my bucket list. What a sweet way to meet your husband! I also love me some pizza, it’s my weakness.

    • 25 September, 2014

It really is a great place as long as you don’t mind the spiders. Lol My family thought I was nuts when I came out here. I think they’re all still shocked that I’m still happily married. And yes, I’ve been a ordering a lot of pizza lately so I have more time for writing and editing. 😀

  15. 24 September, 2014

Hello Renee, nice to meet you. The girl who used to live across the street from me moved to Australia and met her hubby and is now married with a baby boy. I’m pathetic at marketing could use lots of tips!!!!

    • 25 September, 2014

Hi Cathrina, nice to meet you too. Australia is a great place to live. 😀 I’m really starting to think that I will need to write more posts on marketing. I’m sure I said that, but it’s worth saying again (to reminded myself).

  16. 24 September, 2014

Hi Renee, your story of migration is so romantic. How wonderful that you love your adopted country so much.

I’m a huge YA and fantasy fan so I’m looking forward to reading Shadow Stalker.

    • 24 September, 2014

Hi Shadé, thanks for stopping by! Yeah Australia is great. I love it here. I really hope you enjoy reading Shadow Stalker. Let me know what you think!

  17. 24 September, 2014

What a great story. My youngest son and I would love to visit Australia someday.

    • 24 September, 2014

Thanks Dawn! It’s funny because I used to tell everyone when I was a kid that I was going to live in Australia some day, and they’d just laugh at me. You know, the whole cute kid with her cute little imagination thing. Looks who’s laughing now! 😀

  18. 24 September, 2014

Heck with the writing 😉 You had me at pizza and taco–my favorites also. Glad I got a chance to connect with you and thank you for the follows on twitter and elsewhere.

    • 24 September, 2014

You’re welcome, Pat. It’s nice to meet you. I love pizza so much, but I think I’ve been eating way too much of it lately. Igotthese things that look like tortilla boats. I’m gonna make taco salads in them this Friday. 😀

  19. 23 September, 2014

Hi Renee! Linking over from Follow Fest! Nice to meet you! Looking forward to following you!

    • 23 September, 2014

Nice to meet you too Peggy! I’m still working my way around as well.

  20. 23 September, 2014

Jumped in to this to meet a few new bloggers! Great to connect here.

    • 23 September, 2014

      Glad you stopped by! 😀

  21. 23 September, 2014

Oh man, Australia… If I had all the money I would migrate like a bird to Australia in the winter and never be cold again 😉

Your Shadow Stalker series sounds really awesome! I’ll definitely have to give that a try once things quiet down after Follow Fest.

    • 23 September, 2014

Hi Olivia, I love it out here. I just moved here about 10 years ago and I’ll never leave. The winters where I live are very mild. During the days it’s in the 60’s or 70’s (F), and at night it doesn’t usually go below the 40’s. And it’s really only that cold for about a month or so. Then it starts warmimg up again. The summer is super hot and humid though.

I hope you enjoy Shadow Stalker. I’m so excited to be finally publishing it after years of working on it. It’s sort of my baby. 😀

Is it bad that I don’t know what a beta reader is or how a novel can be offered to beta? Who is this beta person and why are they getting so much attention?

Sorry, I’m really computer 101 :-). I threw myself a party when I managed to get my website up, but it took a lot out of me. Had to have TWO glasses of wine!

Congrats on your novellas and your stamina.

    • 23 September, 2014

Hi Ava, don’t feel bad. I only learned what a beta reader is a few months ago. Basically it’s someone or a group of people who reads over your manuscript after you’ve done your initial edits and rewrite to point out grammatical errors and inconsistencies and stuff. Something I’m bad with is forgetting that not everyone has the back story in their heads, so my readers tend to point it out to me a lot when they don’t understand my characters’ motivations and stuff like that.

  23. 23 September, 2014

I’m so excited you’re reading my book! Did Hands of Evil arrive yet? 🙂 I’ve already offered to beta-read the next instalment, but thought I’d mention it again! Also, the Worlds Apart novel you kindly offered to beta will be ready within about a week (it’s taking longer than I thought – trust me to change POV when the book was already written!). Great post. I’m glad you took part 🙂

    • 23 September, 2014

Heya Melissa, I’ve actually finished Sins of the Father. I just wrote this post a while ago and was too lazy to update it. *whistles innocently* It was great, and I can’t wait to read Hands of Evil. I haven’t gotten it yet, but if it’s going through customs it could take a few weeks. I’ve had several things sent to me that got held up in cusroms, but it’ll get here. Ooooo I can’t wait to read that one. It’ll be good timing too because that’s about when I’ll be sending E3 out to my betas. I can’t remember. Did you ask to be added to the list? I know someone did and I can’t remember who it was now.

  24. 23 September, 2014

It’s great to meet someone who enjoys marketing. That will serve you well. I hope to learn from your expertise.

Hi Elizabeth, I’m starting to think I should be writing a lot more marketing posts and guest posts. I’ll be heading over to ckeck our more blogs today. It’s going to be a crazy day with my tour going on as well.

  25. 22 September, 2014

Hi Renee, so great to meet you! I’m blown away by the fact that you love marketing and promotion, because I definitely struggle with those! And most of the funny stuff that I write is influenced by sitcoms like The Golden Girls, so I can certainly see how Star Wars could be a major influence for you! I’ll make sure to follow all your social media profiles. Thanks for signing up for my blog tour and feel free to reach out when you need the favor returned! Best of luck to you! 🙂

    • 23 September, 2014

Hi Quanie, it’s great to meet you too. I’m actually surprised by how so many people don’t like or have trouble with marketing. For me it’s just a lot of fun. I’ll be happy to help you out in that department where I can and answer questions you might have. Thae Golden Girls were great! I believe I’ve signed up for all of yours as well, but it was really later (early) so I’ll have to check again. And same to you. Can’t wait to read your work.

  26. 22 September, 2014

You had me at YA and Fantasy!Ya is my fave category and my fave genre is fantasy, hands down! Will be following a multitude of ways! Don’t be alarmed if you see requests from two women that look the same, my sister and I are sisters and we write together so we use the same blog!

    • 22 September, 2014

Lol I’m glad you told me because I was getting confused. Episode 1 of my series Shadow Stalker is freeto download on Smashwords. If you like it, I’d really appreciate a little review on Goodreads. 😀 Thanks so much for stopping by. I’m slowly getting around to everyone’s blogs.

  27. 22 September, 2014

    Thanks for participating, Renee!

I have two kids with autism, so I know how tough it can be. It’s a lot of work to raise them, but don’t give up. All that work your doing is certainly helping your daughter. 🙂

    • 22 September, 2014

Thanks for hosting the event. It’s a great idea! Some days I really want to rip my hair out, but I know she’s worth it. 🙂

  28. 22 September, 2014

Wow! Some who likes marketing! That’s a rare find. I added you to my twitter feeds and smashwords(I forgot about that one). I also added you to my feeds (I use bloglovin’).

    • 22 September, 2014

Oh I love marketing. If I didn’t love writing more, it would have been my career of choice. Thanks for the adds! 😀
