I woke in the darkness of my alcove. Kado snored lightly in the corner, leaning against the wall. He must have fallen asleep looking after me. Part of me wanted to just curl up with him. I felt a great need to be comforted, but there might still be a chance to save Cali. The only problem was I wasn’t sure how I would do it. I had no doubt Kado still had me anchored.
Even if I could break my connection with him again, there was no way I would do it, but maybe there was another way around it. If I could overcome the effects of the beryllonium, then I could find my way through this barrier. I sat and closed my eyes, feeling for the connection Kado had with me. Normally it was a pull I felt in my solar plexus, where Kado and I were joined with a cord of energy, but this felt different. It was as though I was wrapped in a cocoon of energy.
Maybe if I broke the cocoon, I would be able to shift again. Any time I tried though, the cocoon pressed in on me. The harder I pushed, the more tightly it compressed around me. I nearly lost consciousness, then Kado stirred. If I kept this up, he would sense it and wake up. Then I’d really be in trouble.
Cali was going to die if I didn’t do something. I couldn’t give up. In a bout of frustration, I pushed on the cocoon in all directions and it shattered. Kado opened his eyes, but I didn’t hesitate. I shifted and hid myself with the veil. This way no one would sense me or find me in the shadow world, but Kado would eventually find a way around it. I didn’t have much time.
