WIP Wednesday: New Short Story Coming!

Yay! I have finished the short story for March. It’s with the editor right now, but it will be ready for its 15th of March release date. It’s called, The Dream Crypt (An Onyx Warrior Short Story), and I’m seriously considering doing a series based on it. If you’d like to read more about it, I have a page set up for it and it’s even available for pre-order in some places.

The Dream Crypt

I’ve also finished Episode 19 of Shadow Stalker and that’s with the editor as well. I’ll be starting episode 20 this week and should have it done by next week. Episode 19 is due to be released the 5th of April.

I’m still in the planning stages for A God’s Deception series. It’s more involved than I first anticipated since I’m essentially building an entirely new society that has developed around a religion that I’m also creating. It’s been interesting though. The story has changed a lot from the original concept, but I think it’ll be a lot better now.

I’ll be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo next month, so I’m hoping to get a good start on the story then. I set a pretty low word count because my daughter is off from school for the first two weeks in April, and I don’t schedule any new stuff when she’s not in school. I usually use that time (when I’m not doing stuff with my daughter) to catch up if I’ve fallen behind. So I won’t start writing the novel until the second half of the month.

That’s about all for now. Don’t forget to sign up below to get a free book!

Weekly Fantasy Fix: How I Feel When I’m Creating the Villain!

Good authors like to get into their character’s heads when they’re writing, much like an actor does when portraying a character on the stage or screen. It’s the best way to make your characters seem real and behave spontaneously rather than assuming what they’d do next. But what happens when an author gets into the head of their villains?

I’ve always had a bit of a warped imagination. You’d have to, to write about torture and other such horrors. When I started writing Shadow Stalker, I wanted a villain that wasn’t just evil. I wanted him to be completely psychotic, but not just for the sake of being psychotic. There had to be a purpose to it (which hasn’t come out in the story yet, so I won’t mention it here).

I’m not a psychotic person, though. I’m sure I’d have been locked away by now if I was. So getting into his head and trying to think like he would has been rather difficult. Since the story is written from the main character’s POV, I didn’t have to write for him much, but he is the emperor of a society he built from the ground up. His mentality had to show in the “world” he created around him. So in that sense, I still had to get into his head.

His psychosis is a mix of what he was born with and his experiences growing up or at least how he viewed his experiences as a deranged man. So I had to first do a bit of research to find out how a psychotic person might view the world. Then I had to put myself in his shoes.

For a while, I could see the world as someone like that would see it, and it was a bit startling. It gave me nightmares. I have to say I was a bit tame when I started writing the story. The things that went through my head were much too horrific to share with my readers. At least to start with. I didn’t want to scare people away.

Drevin is definitely an interesting character though, and one of these days, when I’m brave enough, I might write a short story or novella from his point of view. I think some of my readers would probably enjoy something like that… maybe…

WIP Wednesday: More Changes!

Don’t you just love the new year?

I do… it’s when I make a lot of changes and everything feels so fresh and new. It’s very stimulating and motivating. One of the biggest changes I’ve made is to my writing schedule. I get too bored if I’m only working on one project at a time, and it actually causes me to get less done. So, I’ve decided I need to go back to working on multiple projects like I used to.

Starting this week, I’m focusing on writing one serial chapter a day (well, on my writing days), and I’m working on my novel planning for the A God’s Deception series.

I’m also going to try and stagger it so I’m in different stages with each project I’m working on. I don’t want to be editing two things at once. That will just get crazy (especially since editing is so monotonous).

I’ve also decided that since the popularity of my serial is up, I’m going to start publishing individual episodes of Shadow Stalker on Amazon, Smashwords and other retail outlets again. Yay!!!

Here is the release schedule for those:

  • 5 April – Epsiode 19
  • 3 May – Episode 20
  • 7 June – Episode 21
  • 5 July – Episode 22
  • 2 August – Episode 23
  • 6 September – Episode 24

And, of course, for those who prefer to wait for the bundle, that will be released on the 22nd of November this year.

I’m also aiming to write a release a short story each month. We’ll see how that goes. I just miss writing short stories. They’re so much fun to write, and I want my readers to have something new from me more often. I’m hoping to have the first one released by the end of March, but I haven’t worked out a schedule for those yet. I’ll let you know!

In the meantime, don’t forget you can now get Shadow Stalker Parts 1 & 2 free if you haven’t read those yet.
