The Link Between Reading & Writing #WritersLife

I mentioned in my YouTube Tuesday post last week that I had realized I didn’t do as much reading last year as I normally would and wondered if somehow it was linked to how little writing I did. When I read, I feel this compulsion to start writing. Just reading a few chapters at night before I go to bed makes me wake up feeling this need to write. That’s not to say that I don’t generally feel like writing, but when I’m having a bad pain day or I’m tired, getting motivated is difficult.

The more I thought about it, the more it made me wonder, so I’ve decided to experiment. This year I’m going to commit to reading at least one chapter every night and I’m going to see if it affects how much I write.

The other night I ended up reading an entire book. I had a bout of insomnia (brought on by the fact that my daughter was starting high school the following day and I was feeling a tad nervous about how her day would go…it went very well, btw), and I decided to read to pass the time. I expected to get tired and fall asleep after a couple chapters, but the book was one of those you just don’t want to put down. So I kept reading and before I knew it, the sun was coming up.

The following morning I was in a mood to write, but once my daughter left for school, I was so tired I couldn’t keep my eyes open… obviously, staying up all night reading is not conducive to a good writing day. So well see how it goes in the coming week.

What do you do to get in a writing mood? Does reading make you feel more creative?

Honestly, I’ve been terrible the past several years reading books. I read ALOT on my computer though. It’s not due to “not wanting” to read. With my eye condition, it’s a challenge to read books in general as the prints are way too small; and using the hand-held magnifier is a bit cumbersome. So, I’ve taken to reading on the computer monitor which means I read mainly articles, blogs, and ebooks. Anyhoo, I do notice that reading and writing tend to go hand in hand for me as well. 🙂

Yeah, I mostly read on my tablet or phone. Its hard for me to read sometimes as well because I have torn tendons in both my shoulders and it hurts to hold a book or even the tablet/phone sometimes.
