Why I Decided to Write Serialized Fiction

I came up with the idea for, Shadow Stalker about five years ago. I wanted to write a story in a fictional world that reflected my shamanic beliefs. The story has undergone many changes since I first came up with the idea. Originally it was meant to be a series of novels, but everyone seems to be writing series these days, and I wanted to do something different.

I also didn’t want people to have to wait six months to a year to know what was coming next in the story. At first I was going to write the entire series, and publish the individual novels about three months apart. Then I read about how some authors are publishing chapters of their novels as they write them and charging about $1 per chapter.

I thought it was a great idea, except that most novels are an average of thirty chapters. That meant I’d be charging people about $30 for a novel that would be in electronic format. It seemed a bit excessive to me, so I came up with the idea of writing “episodes” instead of chapters. They would be about the length of three chapters and I could write them in the same spirit as an episode of a TV series, where each one would be part of a larger story, but would also be its own story.

Now my readers will be able to enjoy a new addition to the, Shadow Stalker saga each month. The first episode, The Hidden Truth, is available as a free download for all on Smashwords.
